NEW YEAR'S UPDATE: Paramount Air Monitoring Activities
The school district continues to work with the SCAQMD to provide access for air quality testing purposes. Educating and providing a safe learning environment for the students, faculty and staff of the Paramount Unified School District is an unwavering commitment, and remains a very high priority. The district is following the direction provided by the (SCAQMD) in its efforts to reduce the level of air pollution (specifically, hexavalent chromium, or chromium VI), which has been a concern in the City of Paramount.
Please rest assured that the district is committed to being an active community partner in holding our environmental regulatory agencies accountable to resolve this issue that is affecting the community. Ultimately, our mission is to educate and prepare our children for college and careers and safe learning environments are critical to the success of our students.
A little history - air quality testing in the school district has been conducted over the past three years, and currently the SCAQMD has testing equipment at several schools in the district. Recently, the SCAQMD stated that the readings from the operational testing equipment has been determined to be at low levels. The district will continue to work with SCAQMD’s staff to continue monitoring the air quality of our school learning environments to ensure that our air continues to be well below levels of concern.
PUSD central office administrators actively participate in weekly phone conferences conducted by SCAQMD. Meeting participants include City officials, representatives of elected officials, and other key leaders and members of the community. Having said that, our focus remains on our goal as a district: to ensure learning and success for each student by providing a quality education. By working with the SCAQMD and remaining true to our role as educators we can ensure that we remove any outside barrier that would prevent our students from achieving success.
The district fully understands that this issue has raised concern for some members of our family; however, it should be stated again that no air tests have resulted in troublesome levels of hexavalent chromium at any of our school sites; contrary to public opinion these conclusions continue to be well below levels of concern.
This is an on-going concern for not only the district, but for our Paramount community. It is our understanding that the SCAQMD has recently taken large measures to mandate that industrial businesses comply with strict environmental standards. We are part of many voices in the community that are calling for our industrial businesses to be good neighbors and ensure they are providing safe environments for their employees and our local residents. Given that, we are confident that this environmental matter facing our City will only improve over the coming months and beyond.
In the meantime, we will remain actively involved and will keep you informed and updated as new information is known.
